Day 15: Tower of David - Jerusalem City Museum - St. Peter

Day 15.  Wednesday Jan 14.

Another great day in the Holy City - Jerusalem.

6:30 AM:  Holy Mass at the Altar of Stabat Mater - commemoration Mary's sorrow as she stood at the foot of the cross - at the Rock of Golgotha - the location of Christ's crucifixion.

7:30 AM:  Breakfast.

9:30 AM:  Day begins going to the "Tower of David" - which now houses the Jerusalem City Museum.  Nice view of the "Old City" from the roof.  Exhibit of the history of Jerusalem housed in the "Tower of David."  Our guide gave us an impressive explanation of "Salvation History" - from the time of Abraham (1850 BC) to 1st C. AD time of Christ as related to Jerusalem.

View from the roof of the Tower of David.

Dome on the Rock - currently the most significant religious site for Muslim's in Jerusalem - built atop the location of the Temple Mount - the most Holy location of the Jewish religion.

Model in the Museum of the History of Jerusalem.

12 PM:  St. Peter Church - built atop the location of the High Priest - Caiaphas' house - where Jesus was seized from the Mount Olives and taken to - mocked - humiliated and spat upon - while Peter stood outside and denied the Lord three times.

LOOK-UP:  JOHN 18:1  "When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered."

Stairs that lead to the Mount of Olives beyond the Kidron Valley - from the location of the Upper Room where the Last Supper took place.

LUKE 22:54; 59-62 "Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priests house.  Peter followed at a distance...'Certainly this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.'  But Peter said, 'Man I do not know what you are saying.'  Immediately, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed.  And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.  And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times.'  And he went out and wept bitterly."

According to the customs of the time - although not explicitly accounted in Scripture - Jesus was held over night - while the Chief priests deliberated (sat on the decision on whether to carry out the death sentence) - in a "dungeon" or dark pit - in chest high - filthy water - unable to sit - all night.  Here we prayed the Psalm 88 - the "pre-figurement" of this event.

LOOK-UP:  Psalm 88 (87): 4, 6  Prayer for help in despondency  "I am reckoned among those who go down to the Pit:  I am a man who has no strength...You have put me in the depths of the Pit, in the regions dark and deep...

Location of the "Pit" or dungeon.

Men at prayer.
